“Are you sure you're okay?” On her knees, working her way among the bodies, Cara checked for any sign of life.

He was not okay, Josh admitted to himself. But he was getting there. “I'm fine. Let's go.”

As soon as he'd come around enough that he could move his head without keeling over, Cara had helped him struggle to his feet. Now, still a little woozy, he leaned against the wall, watching her.

She finally stood, her grisly task over. Tears filled her eyes when she met his. Shook her head. “Nothing. They're all dead.”

Josh clenched his jaw, brimming with rage. Matthews – or whatever his name was – was a savage. He'd killed those boys – he couldn't think of them as men – without one second of hesitation.

“Let's go.” He pushed himself away from the wall. Almost went down before she lunged for him and held him steady. Slinging his arm over her shoulder for support, they started toward the door.

“Wait.” She stopped abruptly and dug into her pocket when her phone vibrated.

“Graves,” she answered. “Yeah. No. He's with me. He's hurt, but he'll be okay.”

RRA HQ no doubt. Calling Cara to find out what happened to him when they tried to respond to his text with Matthews' picture. Nothing rattles the brass like a missed check-in or an unanswered phone.

A brick, that's what had happened. Slammed into the back of his head. At least that's what it had felt like. Damn. His head pounded like a bitch. He leaned heavily against the wall and Cara, half-listening to her side of the conversation, as she told them what they'd discovered and the seven people Matthews had assassinated.

Then she listened, pinching her brows and closing her eyes in concentration. It could have been thirty seconds. Could have been an hour before she ended the call. He felt like he was hovering somewhere between now and nowhere, trying to get his brain synapses working.

Someone had gotten the drop on him.

Knocked him out.

Dragged him into the apartment.

Murdered a woman and those six boys.

Cara had kissed him.

Whoa.

That thought jolted him closer to full alert.

Cara had kissed him.

He looked at her hard when she disconnected.

“Between NSA, RRA and Department of Defense and Homeland Security, a hundred wheels have been set into motion. The Palo plant has been notified of an eminent threat and are in the process of locking down under a code red.”

She stopped abruptly, touched a hand to his forehead. “What? Are you sure you're doing okay?”

“You kissed me?”

Her eyes went wide. Then she squared her shoulders and went all CO on him. “You contacted RRA without clearing it with me?”

Okay, then. They weren't going to talk about the kiss.

“Um … you weren't exactly available,” he pointed out, wondering how many demotions he'd get for abandoning protocol.

Really?

“Well … ” She pocketed her phone. “It was a good call. They ran the pic you took of Matthews' driver's licenses through our facial recognition program.”

“One of his drivers licenses. One of his names.” The fog was gradually clearing.
